After ten years of creating “fine-art furniture” for a prominent west-coast based line, Douwe has begun to design and produce pieces under his name. Each piece is a unique combination of fine art and furniture design. The same sculpting and casting techniques used for his Limited Edition bronzes are used in the creation of these unique and classic pieces. His line will continue to grow as he creates and adds new designs. Much of his work is custom, and he welcomes contact with designers who need that special piece that cannot be found anywhere else.

This strikingly unique desk is completely hand-made using nothing but true "old world" practices. This design utilizes three diverse elements to create an elegant desk combining arts and crafts feel with a strong 1940's French flavor. The desktop is fashioned from 1" solid cherry boards cut from a 100-year old tree with boards of almost unheard of widths in today's market, and affixed to the sides with expansion joints to allow for the natural wood movement. The three drawers utilize no modern hardware, but traditional old world rail technology. The legs are hand-forged from solid steel bars on an antique coal forge and still prominently bear the marks of the hammer. The solid bronze bands harmonize the entire piece and work with the bronze drawer pulls to create a beautiful linear movement.

I have always believed in “embracing my medium”. Which to me simply means “if it’s bronze, let it look like bronze”. Here I experimented with new techniques to achieve this wonderful surface treatment. My other goal here was to give this piece movement where none existed. This figure is not moving, and yet there is much going on. I worked hard on the subtleties of the pose to achieve movement in every plane.
